Hui Mālama Makanalua

June 30th 2023 – will mark the 54th anniversary of the ending of the law that "quarantined" those with Hansen's disease (leprosy) on the Makanalua peninsula (commonly known as Kalaupapa).  For this year’s event we have arranged for lei to be placed in observance of this anniversary and honor those who were subject to the public health policy.

Hui Mālama Makanalua invites everyone again this year to honor the patients of Kalaupapa — by making a lei (literal or virtual); dedicating it to a former patient; placing it in the ocean, in your yard, or somewhere meaningful to you; taking a picture or making a video (or using a picture from a previous trip to Kalaupapa); and posting your thoughts on social media during the month of June. #leihaliaokalaupapa
